X-Ray
A quick, painless test that produces images of the structures inside your body. As x-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed in different amounts depending on the density of the material through which they pass. Dense materials, such as bone and metal, show up as white on X-rays. The air in your lungs shows up as black. Fat and muscle appear as shades of gray. The average X-ray exam takes no more than 10 to 15 minutes per scan(e.g., cervical spine, knee, or chest x-ray). For most X-rays, no special patient preparation is required.

CT Scan
“Computed tomography” is an x-ray procedure that uses a computer to generate cross-sectional views of the body. You can expect the exam to last no longer than an hour, depending on the preparation needed and whether it includes the use of a contrast medium. The scan itself usually will take less than a minute.

MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, uses a magnetic field and radio waves together with a computer to create cross-sectional pictures of the inner body. The MRI suite at Charlton Memorial Hospital features a Siemens 1.5T magnet as well as a 3.0T magnet, which ensure the highest quality and clarity of images. The MRI suites at St Luke’s Hospital and Tobey hospital both feature GE 1.5T magnets. You may have a friend or family member sit with you during the exam. The length of the exam depends on the type of study being performed and may last between 20 and 60 minutes.

A diagnostic imaging procedure that provides physicians with information about the body’s chemistry, cellular function and exact location of disease, to help make an earlier diagnosis or to determine the effectiveness of treatment. You should plan on spending at least two to three hours at the imaging facility. There is a 60 minute resting period before imaging, and your actual scan will take approximately 15-35 minutes, depending on the type of scan you are having.

The beam is transmitted to a TV-like monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail. Fluoroscopy, as an imaging tool, enables physicians to look at many body systems, including the skeletal, digestive, urinary, respiratory, and reproductive systems.
